Why do Runners need a massage?
Your body significantly benefits from running. Running reduces your risk from a heart attack or stroke, helps you maintain a healthy weight/lifestyle, builds strong bones, helps you strengthen your muscles, and much more. But did you also know that running is constantly putting stress on your muscles and joints? Not taking care of your body can lead to serious injuries. Massage can be an important part of your overall health and well-being.
What massage will best benefit runners (athletes)?
There are many different type of massages, each with their own benefits. It is recommended that runners request deep tissue or sports massage. A deep tissue massage is typically a full-body massage that treats sports injuries and chronic pain while applying a great amount of pressure with slow, deep strokes. A sports massage targets specific areas/muscles in your body to relieve pain and tension while using faster paced strokes and involves stretching. Both are great techniques that accelerates healing and improves overall health.
What are the benefits of massage for runners:
Relaxes muscle tension
Repairs muscle damage
Restores the joint range of motion
Relieves pressure from muscles, tendons, and ligaments
Reduces inflammation and stiffness
When is the best time to get a massage?
Getting a massage depends on many factors including your schedule, your budget, and any injuries you may have. Many runners find that getting a massage once a week or every other week is beneficial. After your massage session, your massage therapist will recommend when you should return. It's always important to listen to your body and do what feels best for you!
